South Africa Update
I had a good first day here in Cape Town. Mario and I attend Urban Edge Church in the morning. I made a few observations about church:
1. Australia is teaching the world to worship. They did a bunch of Hillsongs music.
2. The church had a young feel with a lot of young adults. I think this is a trend we are seeing more and more of in the global church.
3. Generally, churches just aren’t very friendly. We had one person say hi to us. Even after they introduced us from the stage, nobody talked to us.
We spent the afternoon down at the coast. The mountain you see in the background is Table Mountain and just beyond that is the Cape of Good Hope, the southernest most point in Cape Town, but not Africa.

Africa is a wonderfully beautiful place. I dunno much about South Africa, especially the churches, but the people in Okahandja, Namibia couldn’t be friendlier, from professional school teachers, to the kids. Some come across just a little cold at first, but man they all have huge hearts. In general I’d agree that most church people are not very friendly though, based on my American experiences — what’s wrong with that picture?

Joel I’ve taken many trip to Central and South America and they are extremely hospitable culturally and in their churches as well. And then I’ve been to American and European churches and generally, they just are not. Cape Town was originally a Dutch settlement that was eventually take over by the British. So it has lot of European influence here.
I think our Latin, African and even Asian brothers and sisters win the award hands done for hospitality. It’s just something that Americans and Europeans (generally) don’t have a handle on.
