This is a thought-provoking post. On the one hand, I completely agree with you about the importance of reliability in brand. On the other, equating "brand" with "trust" leaves a lot on the table.

As someone who writes on trust, I consider reliability only one part. Others include credibility (which you do addresss), and intimacy and self-orientation (which you don't). These latter two are part of the almost-entirely personal component of trust. Since brands are by nature about impersonal things (companies, products), there's a disconnect.

On the other hand--if you look at things like integrity in the management of branded companies, you've got your link. if you really trust a company to do the right thing, then their product-based brand attributes are greatly strengthened.

More on this idea at http://trustedadvisor.com/trustmatters/355/Is-Brand-Trust-An-Oxymoron . Thanks for raising the subject.

Very thought provoking. I have and continue to find myself wondering how in the world I could even consider "leading" with my American leadership training in a place like Zambia where the unemployment rate is as high as 70% and 1 in maybe 100 kids who are top of their class get the chance to go on to college. What would I have to offer? I can't even imagine growing up in that society and how I would be. I would most likely be very much like the culture -- though desiring something was different be at a complete loss for how to remedy it. Hmmm...kind of funny...I think that's exactly where I'm at coming from the outside. So maybe it isn't really so different after all.

Josh, thanks for the comments and the encouragement. We're not the 3rd biggest (one of the biggest in the UK) but our current market cap is around $36bn. c.40% of people in the UK buy something from us apparently. So pretty significant in the scheme of the UK, not so big in the USA.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on it all too, and how it's impacting what's going on around where you live.

I'm pretty sure the Antichrist has to be male according to the tense and gender of speech in which he is referred to in Revelations. I guess she could undergo a sex change.

Josh, good thoughts on the power of story. I keep hearing of entreprenuers who basically get people so convinced on the story, they get people to join their firms without even asking what the package is! I wonder what happens when we stop giving testimonies and start telling stories?

I don't know if it's necessarily a "either/or" issue. I think it's more "both/and."

I don't think living quality over quanity is a balanced life and I don't believe living quantity over quality is either. I think in the end we are responsible for both.

Example: as a father, I can't skimp on either quality or quantity with Caden.

With that said, I think it's the same with your question. I think you have to have both: quality of life in what Christ calls us to do and quality of life in an American cultural sense. I think in the end we are responsible to Him for both - what we do with our stuff.

That's my quick short response. Obviously, that's a conversation that would take some time to unpack.

hey josh...kind of off topic, but spurred by what you said in your post. It's something that I've been thinking over recently. In most everything in life I live Quality over Quantity, but it hit me the other day that as Christians is there really anything Biblically foundational about "quality of life"? Is this something as Christians we should even involve ourselves?

I differentiate it two ways...quality of life in the sense of doing whatever Christ calls us to do (i.e. a quality life of a missionary serving in the slums of some African village) vs. the quality of life that most would consider the potential of any American.

Just a sideline thought, though not the intent of your post.
